1. You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in monsoon and summer. But as weather conditions change, so too, should your skin care routine. During winter, the outer layer of skin becomes very. Find an "ointment" moisturizer that's oil-based, rather than lotion or water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture. People with oily skin too must use moisturiser. For them light moisturising lotions or water based moisturisers are fine. Use outward and slightly upward strokes when applying on the face. 2. Winter season makes one feel thirsty less often so make sure you are drinking enough water. Dehydration can worsen dry skin problem.
3. Of course, hot water showers feel great in winter, but they wreak havoc on dry skin. Try a lukewarm shower instead, and then pat your skin dry with a towel. Use body moisturiser right after shower while the skin is still damp. It will help seal in the moisture.
4. Avoid skin products that have a high alcoholic content. When alcohol evaporates, it feels cool and refreshing, but it also strips away moisture, so opt for alcohol-free products.
5. Heat pure coconut oil and apply on scalp and hair ends. Wrap a hot towel and let it stay for sometime. Next morning, wash your hair with a mild shampoo. If you're already dealing with dry, brittle hair, resist the urge to reach for the hair dryer. It'll only make things worse. Dry and style your hair with a towel, and if you still want to use a dryer, time yourself and try to use it a little less.
6. One of the biggest problems during winter is chapped lips. Use a lip balm with at least SPF 15. Some lip balms have tea tree oil, which helps heal painful cracks.
7. Your hands, feet, knees and elbows need to be looked after too, during winter. Use products containing shea butter, petrolatum, mineral oil, tea tree oil or glycerin at night, Those with cracked heels should soak their feet in warm water at night for 15 minutes. Scrub with a pumice stone. It helps any moisturizers you use to sink in faster and deeper. .Apply cream and then slip on gloves or socks to lock in the moisture.
8. Sunscreen isn't just for summertime. Winter sun can still damage your skin. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they're exposed) atleast 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.
