Body Sculpting
The wish to look good and have a great body is increasing making liposuction the most common aesthetic procedure performed worldwide and in India as well. This has also happened due to expected outcomes and the increased safety associated with this procedure.
Certain fat deposits are very resistant as compared to others. This is especially so in designated fat stores – abdomen, hips and thighs for a woman (pear shape) while for a man it is chest and abdomen (apple). Even if one loses weight, the body proportion may not change significantly in these areas and the bulges continue to be bothersome. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from these areas and the body is sculpted back into shape.
Fat accumulation happens due to an unbridled life style, dietary indiscretion or both. Women who have gone through childbirth also find themselves in such a situation due to difficulty in losing weight.
The commonly treated areas are – abdomen, hips, thighs, love handles, saddle bags, inner thighs, buttocks, upper and lower back and the arms. The under chin area and the jaw line are commonly addressed on the face. The amount of fat removed will depend on the areas addressed and the volume of fat deposited.
The most important thing for the permanency of the results is a change in lifestyle so as to have a calorie restricted diet and increased activity.
Most liposuctions at our centre are performed by a procedure called Tumescent Liposuction. This technique of liposuction is performed under local anestheisa and has become very simple and safe compared to older methods
The word “tumescent” means swollen and firm. In the tumescent technique, tiny access points (2-3 mm) are made in natural creases or within bikini line through which the dilute anaesthetic solution is infiltrated into the fat beneath the skin, causing the targeted area to become tumescent. The fat is then aspirated using a fine canula by smooth controlled movements. The local anesthetic lidocaine in the tumescent solution provides such complete local anesthesia, that it eliminates the need for general anesthesia, or IV sedation. The drug epinephrine (adrenalin) provides profound localized vasoconstriction that it virtually eliminates surgical bleeding during tumescent liposuction. Because local anesthesia persists for many hours there is no need for narcotic pain medications after surgery.
A custom made pressure garment/corset (made of Lycra and cotton) will be put on immediately after the surgery. The garment is to be worn for a month after surgery
Post surgery sequels include swelling, bruising and bearable discomfort. These are temporary and should disappear over a few weeks. You can return to work in 3-4 days and can start heavy physical activity in 4 weeks.
Complications are unusual following liposuction. Seroma, pigmentation, minor irregularities, temporary loss of sensation, blood clots and skin ulcerations have been reported.
You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body quite soon after surgery. However, improvement will become even more apparent after about four to six weeks. After about three months, the full results and the final contour will be visible.
If your expectations are realistic, you will probably be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body. And, by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your new shape.
